Fillings are required when a tooth has a cavity or a defect. The decay is removed and then a filling material – either tooth colored or silver – is placed. An old filling may also need to be replaced because of wear, staining or new decay around the edges of the filling.
Composite resins or tooth-colored fillings provide good durability and resistance and are best used in small to medium-sized restorations. They can be used on either front or back teeth. Composites cost more than amalgam or silver fillings and occasionally are not covered by insurance plans. Silver fillings can last 40 or more years, tooth-colored fillings should last 10-15 years.
Tooth-colored fillings are now used more often than amalgam or silver fillings. However, in some cases an amalgam or silver filling may be the best choice.
You can have your silver fillings replaced with tooth-colored restorations. The dentist will discuss what options are available. Small- to medium-sized fillings can be replaced in one appointment. Larger fillings may require a crown to strengthen the tooth.
